Airfix and The Carbon Removers form strategic alliance for carbon removal in Europe

In a significant development for environmental technology and climate action, two trailblazers in carbon removal have declared a strategic alliance to spearhead the development of carbon removal technologies across Europe and the United Kingdom. Switzerland-based Airfix and The Carbon Removers, formerly recognised as Carbon Capture Scotland, will advance Bioenergy with Carbon Capture and Storage (BECCS) methods in the Netherlands, Denmark, and the UK through their collaboration.

This partnership dovetails with the overarching European climate objectives aimed at reducing emissions and enhancing sustainable practices. Projects under this initiative are projected to commence in the UK, with an ambition to initially eliminate up to 30,000 tonnes of carbon dioxide annually by the year 2026. With sights set on expanding beyond this initial phase, the collaboration aims to capture an impressive 100,000 tonnes of CO2 across Europe each year by 2027.

The partnership will focus its efforts on CO2 derived from biogenic sources, which encompass agricultural waste as well as by-products from the distillery and brewery sectors. By utilising these sources, the companies aim to produce environmental benefits in tandem with economic advancements in the regions where these projects are based.

For the capture process, the carbon dioxide will be securely transported and permanently stored in geological formations, including underwater storage facilities in the North Sea. Alternatively, the captured gas may be utilised in the production of carbonated construction materials, offering a dual approach to carbon management.

Both companies plan to use their combined expertise to stimulate decarbonisation efforts within key Carbon Dioxide Removal (CDR) hubs across Europe. These initiatives are designed to generate high-quality carbon removal credits, effectively contributing to the reduction of legacy CO2 emissions, and advancing towards net zero emissions targets.

Airfix and The Carbon Removers bring complementary strengths to the table. The Carbon Removers leverage their expertise in biogenic carbon capture, while Airfix contributes its capabilities in the transportation, storage, and commercialisation of BECCS technologies. This confluence of expertise is set to accelerate the rollout of effective carbon removal strategies that promise to benefit both environmental and local economic landscapes.

Sanjay Parekh, Chief Commercial Officer at The Carbon Removers, expressed confidence in the collaborative initiative, highlighting the enhanced capacity for innovative CO2 solutions that the partnership brings. He emphasised the potential for these strategies to have positive impacts both on the environment and regional economies.

Aymeric Reymond, the Head of Project Development at Airfix, noted that the companies have been working together informally over the past two years. The formalisation of their partnership, he remarked, marks an exciting leap forward in scaling BECCS technologies within the European context.

These efforts are anticipated to play a substantial role in the ongoing drive for sustainable carbon management and economic development in Europe, aligning with the broader climate goals that the continent is striving towards.
