Mitsubishi Heavy Industries has delivered a state-of-the-art carbon dioxide compressor package to ExxonMobil for their CCS expansion project in Wyoming, reflecting a strong collaboration in the fight against climate change.

Mitsubishi Heavy Industries (MHI), a prominent player in global engineering and manufacturing, has successfully delivered a sophisticated carbon dioxide (CO2) compressor package for ExxonMobil's carbon capture and storage (CCS) expansion project. This project, located in LaBarge, Wyoming, marks a significant contribution to the ongoing efforts to enhance CO2 capture capabilities, aligning with international carbon reduction goals.

The core component of this advanced project, the compressor, was meticulously manufactured and underwent rigorous testing at MHI Compressor Corporation (MCO) in Hiroshima, Japan. Following its construction, the equipment was transported and delivered in April 2024. To ensure smooth integration and operational readiness, the packaging work was undertaken by MHI Compressor International Corporation (MCO-I) based in Pearland, Texas. This strategic step allowed for final inspections and necessary familiarisation with the equipment by the end-user, adding a layer of preparedness and assurance.

Michael McCurry, serving as Account Executive at MCO-I, underscored the longstanding collaboration between MHI and ExxonMobil as a pivotal element in MHI's involvement in this project. He cited the significant capabilities of MHI in manufacturing and testing large, vertically split type machines as a key advantage. This technical prowess played an influential role in the project's execution, ensuring that the machinery met the robust requirements set out for such an essential task in carbon management.

The compressor package incorporates a set of unique technologies designed to simplify the installation and removal processes of the large compressor bundle during routine maintenance. This design innovation is aimed at ensuring operational efficiency and reliability, reducing downtime, and enhancing the overall effectiveness of the CCS operations.
