Switzerland launches call for proposals on carbon emission reduction technologies

The Federal Office of Energy seeks innovative solutions to reduce carbon emissions, aiming for net zero by 2050 amidst significant challenges.

The Federal Office of Energy in Switzerland has initiated a call for proposals aimed at identifying innovative technologies to mitigate carbon emissions, both from specific point sources and through direct air capture. This initiative reflects the Swiss government's commitment to addressing climate challenges in light of sobering emissions projections for the future.

The urgency of this call stems from estimates predicting that by the year 2050, Switzerland will still be producing approximately 12 to 14 million tonnes of hard-to-abate CO2 equivalents annually. This volume equates to around a quarter of the current greenhouse gas emissions generated by the nation. As industries such as cement production, international aviation, agriculture, and waste incineration continue to present significant challenges in reducing emissions, the Swiss government aims to support advanced solutions capable of addressing these persistent issues.

By focusing on technologies that promote cross-sector synergies—linking multiple point sources or energy domains—Switzerland endeavours to make strides towards its ultimate goal of achieving net zero emissions by 2050. This strategic move aligns with the recommendations outlined in a report published by the Federal Council in May 2022, which highlights pathways for expanding carbon management initiatives. These measures aim to facilitate the capture and storage of half a million tonnes of CO2 by the year 2030.

The call for proposals is currently open, with a deadline for pre-proposal applications set for April 25, 2025. Judgements on the submissions will be made public by the end of May 2025. Successful applicants from this initial round will be required to submit comprehensive proposals by October 31, 2025, with funding decisions announced on December 19, 2025. To assist applicants in understanding the requirements and objectives of the call, the Federal Office of Energy is organising two informative webinars scheduled for January 29, 2025.

This initiative further reinforces Switzerland's collaboration in international efforts toward carbon capture and removal, which includes recent partnerships with other nations sharing similar environmental goals.
