The LEGO Group secures permanent carbon removal assets through ClimeFi

ClimeFi is pleased to announce that it has facilitated a robust portfolio of certified carbon dioxide removals (CDRs) for the LEGO Group. These agreements form part of the LEGO Group’s recent contribution to supporting a diverse portfolio of carbon removal initiatives, amounting to 19 million DKK. KIRKBI A/S, the family-owned holding and investment company behind the LEGO Group brand, has made commitments valued at DKK 5 million with the same initiatives.

ClimeFi’s role in this partnership has provided the LEGO Group with access to a comprehensive suite of high-quality engineered CDR solutions. In addition to offering these solutions, ClimeFi also delivers active, dynamic insights into portfolio monitoring. Three out of the four carbon removal projects — all of the engineered carbon removal projects — were facilitated by ClimeFi. These projects are expected to deliver carbon credits covering the period from 2024 to 2026.

The LEGO Group’s portfolio, built in collaboration with ClimeFi, consists of a combination of biochar and enhanced rock weathering solutions. The biochar removal purchases are sourced from two separate suppliers that leverage technologies to produce high-quality biochar from residual biomass. Meanwhile, the enhanced rock weathering removal purchases are sourced from a company using enhanced rock weathering to capture CO2 and permanently sequester it in the ocean.

This new set of agreements further underscores ClimeFi’s commitment to advancing the carbon removal market and reinforcing its ability to unlock access to carbon removal solutions for pioneering companies. By working with ClimeFi, the LEGO Group is positioning itself at the forefront of the transition to a more sustainable future.

“We're excited to partner with the LEGO Group on this robust and durable carbon removal portfolio,” commented Paolo Piffaretti, Co-Founder and CEO at ClimeFi. “The projects were carefully chosen based on ClimeFi’s strict quality standards and underwent thorough technical review. The LEGO Group’s early adoption of these high-quality carbon removal solutions will help catalyse the growth of the Carbon Dioxide Removal industry and help achieve our shared climate goals.”

Annette Stube, Chief Sustainability Officer at the LEGO Group, said: “We are proud to support these climate initiatives which we believe will have a positive impact on the wider environmental ecosystem. Innovative, high-quality carbon removal projects and emerging technologies have the potential to play an important role in supporting a more sustainable future, while reforestation has the potential to support improved biodiversity. These partnerships allow us to build our understanding of new technologies and practices to support a healthy planet for future generations.”
