Whirlpool Corporation secures carbon removal portfolio through ClimeFi, combining firm offtake commitments and standalone CDR options

The innovative structure provides Whirlpool Corporation with a reliable stream of carbon removal, as well as the flexibility to access future supply

ClimeFi is pleased to share that it is now working with Whirlpool Corporation, a leading home appliance company, to secure a diversified portfolio of durable carbon removal. This commitment is a significant step in furthering Whirlpool Corporation's decarbonization targets.

The agreement is an innovative structure that pairs firm offtake commitments to guarantee a steady stream of high-quality carbon removal with standalone options to reserve access to additional offtakes as needs and markets evolve. The options also provide a hedge against future commercial changes by locking in access to future supply at a fixed price. For project developers, firm offtakes provide certainty and demonstrated buyer commitment to support project investment, while standalone options offer early cash flow and a way to demonstrate market traction.

Samantha Truesdell, Enterprise Sustainability Manager  at Whirlpool Corporation said: “This commitment is an exciting step in a strategy several years in the making. With ClimeFi we have crafted an initial portfolio that reflects Whirlpool Corporation’s unique and progressive approach to decarbonization and environmental sustainability. We are thrilled to be able to support projects that share our core values and ambition to improve life across communities where we do business around the world.”

The portfolio spans four suppliers across Marine CDR, Biogenic Carbon Capture & Storage (Bio-CCS), Enhanced Weathering, and Biochar:

Beyond portfolio diversification, the four projects selected reflect ties to Whirlpool Corporation’s business and geographic footprint, with emphasis being placed on supporting projects that also support communities, including rural and farming communities, in the United States and Brazil.

Paolo Piffaretti, CEO and Co-Founder at ClimeFi said: ‘We are excited to be working with Whirlpool Corporation, a global household name, on securing a carbon removal portfolio that reflects their long-term ambitions. This innovative structure reflects a shift in how corporations think about carbon removal procurement—firm offtakes give Whirlpool Corporation certainty of delivery, while the standalone options give them the flexibility to secure more volume later, on their own terms.’
