ClimeFi Launches the “Beyond Emissions” initiative for Carbon Removal Purchases
The first-of-its-kind initiative aims to open up the BECCS market to a wider pool of buyers
At ClimeFi, our mission is to advance the development of critical carbon removal infrastructure to achieve a net-zero future. With that in mind, we are excited to announce “Beyond Emissions”: a new initiative for buyers looking to enter into the bioenergy carbon capture and storage (BECCS) market. The first opportunity under this initiative involves Stockholm Exergi, one of Sweden's leading district energy suppliers and a prominent BECCS developer.
This time-limited proposition marks a significant step forward in enabling the market to meet our commitment to addressing climate change. A key driver of “Beyond Emissions” is to enable access to large-scale BECCS projects from a wider pool of carbon removal buyers, thanks to the unique preferred commercial terms and guarantees, along with open access to a comprehensive risk assessment of the project.
With this initiative, we are driving forward the future of carbon removal and enabling broader participation with one of the world’s leading CDR projects.
Why is “Beyond Emissions” unique?
Large-scale projects require buyer offtake commitments with significant volume to gain access to CDR generated by these technologies. Even for corporates looking to secure large and long-term commitments, risk assessment and negotiating favourable commercial terms are always a challenge, and buyers struggle to secure the benefits of moving early on the market and building a solid internal case for their C-level.
“Beyond Emissions” aims to tackle issues that limit BECCS purchases by:
- Reducing the minimum transaction size for a large-scale project, with minimum purchases starting at 1,000 tonnes per annum;
- Offering access to the comprehensive due diligence to be conducted by ClimeFi and its pool of experts;
- Including a contractual guarantee from the project developer to ensure it is in compliance with the European Carbon Removal Certification Framework (CRCF);
- Providing price guarantees and up-front visibility on commercial terms across all commitment sizes;
- Eliminating upfront commitments from buyers to benefit from preferred terms.
About Beccs Stockholm and Stockholm Exergi
Beccs Stockholm — the first opportunity under the initiative — will be the largest BECCS project in Europe when completed, delivering an estimated 800,000 tonnes of carbon removals per annum starting in end of 2028. Two main attributes distinguish Stockholm Exergi project from other BECCS projects:
- The flagship project in Europe backed by public institutions: Stockholm Exergi is a public/private organisation (50% owned by the city of Stockholm), which already received the largest European subsidies (€180m from the EU's Innovation Fund), This enables the most competitive terms, limited reputational risks and financial stability over the longer term (limiting delivery risks).
- Existing expertise as Sweden’s leading district energy supplier, generating c.a. €800m of net sales in 2023 and providing local heating to over 800,000 Stockholmers.
Stockholm Exergi’s BECCS facility in the heart of Stockholm is expected to set new standards for BECCS projects, revolutionising how we address climate issues, but also removing CO2 permanently every year from the moment the project is operational.
Following the offtake announcements with Microsoft and Frontier, Stockholm Exergi is eager to engage with additional early adopters to enable an investment decision as soon as possible in 2025.
“Stockholm Exergi is proud to lead the development of BECCS globally. With Beccs Stockholm, we will provide permanent removals to corporations seeking to meet their net-zero targets. The “Beyond Emissions” initiative with ClimeFi will allow more companies to access BECCS in ways they may not have otherwise been able to," said Erik Rylander, Head of Carbon Removal at Stockholm Exergi.”

ClimeFi: advancing the carbon removal market
We are excited to introduce this initiative, which aims to help accelerate the carbon removal market. Through this effort, we aim to create meaningful impact and provide a framework that offers greater access to world-class, large-scale projects globally.
Paolo Piffaretti, Co-Founder & CEO of ClimeFi, added, "This first-of-a-kind initiative will foster broader market adoption of climate-critical projects thanks to the unique structure that ClimeFi has developed with Stockholm Exergi. By enabling access for all CDR buyers to high-quality carbon removal projects, we are driving meaningful impact across sectors while creating value for a diverse market of buyers”
